Thirteen float deployments across the South Pacific were completed by the R/V Kaharoa operated by the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA).  The goal of the GO-BGC program is to have 500 biogeochemical (BGC) floats deployed across all oceans within 5 years.  In order to achieve this number, float deployments are carried out through partnerships and by chartering ships like the R/V Kaharoa to deploy floats in areas where BGC float coverage is sparse.

Float status including number of completed profiles to date is available in the Float Status Table.

Associated documentation, shipboard validation data sets (if collected), and float data sets are available on our Shipboard Calibration and Validation Datasets page.

GO-BGC and SOCCOM floats deployed from the R/V Kaharoa were decorated by students from Silverstream School. A huge “Thank You!” to Ms. Routhan for inspiring her students, they did an excellent job decorating floats.

All thirteen floats deployed on the R/V Kaharoa were adopted by schools in Arizona, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, North Carolina and Virginia, as well as Canada, Malaysia and Ireland. Check out all adopted floats on the Adopt-a-Float table, photos of floats can be found on our Flickr page.
