SUMMARY:2022 MBARI EARTH Teacher Workshop
DESCRIPTION:EARTH uses near-real-time data from ocean observatories to design and test outreach with the Internet as an interface to scientists\, teachers\, students\, and the public. \nThe 2022 workshop will be held in Seattle\, WA\, co-hosted by the Global Ocean Biogeochemistry Array (GO-BGC)\, a project funded by the US National Science Foundation to build and deploy a global network of chemical and biological sensors that will monitor ocean health. This new network of floats will collect data on the chemistry and the biology of the ocean from the surface to a depth of 2\,000 meters\, and will allow scientists to pursue fundamental questions concerning ocean ecosystems\, observe ocean health and productivity\, and monitor the elemental cycles of carbon\, oxygen\, and nitrogen in the ocean through all seasons of the year. \nDuring this workshop\, educators work with active researchers to explore current science and/or engineering research\, data\, and conclusions. The educators are given time to develop their own curricula using the knowledge from these explorations and their own experiences to create classroom lessons tied to the abilities of their own students as well as current education standards and pedagogy. The teachers also develop connections with each other and with the researchers that assist them in expanding their classroom reach across the country. \nBecause we only have a limited number of spots available in each EARTH workshop\, applications are required. Applications\, including all supporting materials\, are due by 8:00 pm PST on February 7\, 2022 for the summer workshop. The application process is outlined on the MBARI website: mbari.org/EARTH \nTeachers involved in this workshop will: \n\nExplore cutting edge marine science and technology\, ocean observatories and the data that they collect\nExamine current scientific studies that use oceanographic data and how that data has changed our way of thinking about the oceans\nDevelop new curriculum that uses real science and near-real-time data to teach science content and process and addresses their needs and the needs of their students\nBe part of a program that integrates the use of near-real-time data and real science into classrooms at a national level\nExperience a rich opportunity for professional collaboration and receive classroom resources\, housing\, and travel allowance (exact amounts will depend on the number of teachers signed up for the workshop). We ask that the participants arrange their own travel; reasonable costs will be reimbursed.\nDiscuss how new curriculum materials can be developed that use virtual reality\, augmented reality\, and/or distance education to teach science content and process and address the needs of educators and their students\n\n \n Learn more and apply
