SUMMARY:GO-BGC Town Hall at ASLO/OSM
DESCRIPTION:Biogeochemical-Argo status and plans\nThe Biogeochemical-Argo program aims to develop a global network of 1000 Argo profiling floats with oxygen\, nitrate\, pH\, and bio-optical sensors. The BGC-Argo array will operate as one component of the One Argo array\, including Core-Argo and Deep-Argo. Contributions of floats with biogeochemical sensors have come from over 20 nations. The BGC-Argo array will address key questions such as: What is the ocean’s role in regulating the carbon cycle? What are the drivers of open ocean deoxygenation? How do physical changes in mixing and circulation affect nutrient availability and productivity? Is the timing and location of phytoplankton blooms changing? Development of the array is accelerating with the funding of large scale programs\, such as the Global-Ocean Biogeochemistry Array (GO-BGC) that intends to deploy 500 BGC profiling floats with support from the US NSF. This Town Hall event will report on the current status of the in situ array\, the real-time and open access data system\, planning for future float deployments that are needed to achieve a global distribution\, and recent developments in float and sensor technology. The workshop will be of interest to marine biogeochemists\, ocean modelers\, fishery scientists\, and educators wishing to use an open\, high quality data resource.

SUMMARY:Building a Community of Biogeochemistry Float Data Users Workshop
DESCRIPTION:To inform and engage a broad oceanographic user community\, the Ocean Carbon & Biogeochemistry (OCB) and the US Climate Variability and Predictability (CLIVAR) Programs are working with GO-BGC leadership to plan a virtual GO-BGC Scientific Workshop from June 28-30\, 2021. The objectives of the workshop are to: \n\nIntroduce the GO-BGC plan to the global scientific community\nDiscuss and innovate on scientific applications of GO-BGC data\nProvide background information on the flow of data and archiving\nDeliver hands-on tutorials and computer code for accessing GO-BGC data\n\nPresentations and discussions will be scheduled for 3-4 hours on each day.  Some presentations will be prerecorded and available online prior to each day’s events for viewing\, so that participants can consider discussion items before the meeting. Pre-registration is required – you can sign up and find more information on the event webpage. \n \n Register for the GO-BGC Workshop

SUMMARY:The Global Biogeochemical-Argo Fleet: Knowledge to Action Workshop
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \n\nMay 4\, 11\, 18\, 25\, and June 1.\nA virtual workshop building on the priorities of the G7 Future of the Seas and Oceans Initiative to explore the applications of a global data-stream from the Biogeochemical-Argo array in fisheries\, carbon budget verification\, and environmental forecasting.\nClick here to access the meeting schedule\, pre-recorded and archived talks\, and discussion forms.\nThe impetus for the workshop is the G7 Future of the Seas and Oceans Initiative for better ocean observations to ensure sustainable use by future generations.  Recent funding by the US National Science Foundation of a $53 million project\, Global Ocean Biogeochemistry Array (GO-BGC)\, to deploy 500 Biogeochemical-Argo profiling floats throughout the world ocean is an important step in this direction. Completion of the planned BGC-Argo system will require establishing collaborations with international partners\, including those beyond the G7 nations. The workshop will celebrate these initial international commitments and discuss how to ensure that the combined investment meets the priorities of the G7 and international funders and stakeholders. The workshop will prioritize next steps with partners to ensure full implementation of the array and the international collaboration required to sustain the array into the future. \nAgenda: Click here for a provisional agenda. \nCode of conduct for workshop participants: Workshop participants are expected to observe the guidelines described here.

SUMMARY:AGU Fall Meeting Town Hall
DESCRIPTION:Current and Future Biogeochemical–Argo Programs and Planning\, TH096\nWednesday\, 16 December 2020\, 7:00 – 8:00 AM PST (10:00 – 11:00 EST) The ocean provides critical services to life on the planet\, absorbing 93% of the heat from anthropogenic warming and a quarter of human CO2 emissions each year. Yet these services come at a price: ocean temperatures rise\, pH and oxygen levels fall\, currents change\, nutrient concentrations shift. Long-term investments of government agencies and private foundations have produced a set of key BGC sensors to track these changes and their impacts on biogeochemical cycles and carbon dioxide uptake. Argo profiling floats equipped with BGC sensors can operate for years\, observing the distributions of chemical and biological properties from 2000 m depth to the surface. The NSF-funded Southern Ocean Carbon and Climate Observations and Modeling (SOCCOM) program has deployed over 180 BGC floats since 2014\, has developed BGC state estimation\, and has applied float results to new understanding of the Southern Ocean’s role in BGC cycles; this has been central to growing modeling and model analysis components. The success of this program\, with some 100 peer-reviewed papers and multiple Ph.D. theses\, demonstrates that the major operational challenges for a global\, international BGC-Argo network have been overcome. Success of the SOCCOM program has led to funding of the Global Ocean Biogeochemistry (GO-BGC) Array by the US NSF. GO-BGC will deploy an additional 500 BGC profiling floats throughout the world ocean. In combination with extensive international efforts\, an array of 1000 profiling floats in waters deeper than 2000 m will be established. In this Town Hall for the entire oceanographic community\, we will review past efforts and future plans for the BGC-Argo program. The success of the BGC-Argo observing system development rests on strong science goals and funded science analysis – we seek community input on issues ranging from data access to mechanisms to interact with process oriented science projects. \nSpeakers\nSOCCOM Overview\n\nLynne Talley\, SOCCOM Observations Lead (University of California\, San Diego)\nJoellen Russell\, SOCCOM Modeling Lead (University of Arizona)\n\nGO-BGC Program and Plans\n\nKen Johnson\, GO-BGC Director & Biogeochemical-Argo Co-Chair (Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute) International BGC-Argo\nHervé Claustre\, Biogeochemical-Argo Co-Chair (Laboratoire d’Océanographie de Villefranche)\n\nFor more information\, contact Roberta Hotinski\, SOCCOM & GO-BGC project manager\, at hotinski@princeton.edu View PDF Announcement
