SUMMARY:2024 MATE World Championship
DESCRIPTION:The MATE ROV Competition is an annual underwater robotics (aka remotely operated vehicle or ROV) challenge that engages a global community of learners. From expanding the Global Ocean Observing System to protecting and restoring ecosystems and biodiversity\, and unlocking ocean-based solutions to climate change\, the 2024 competition mission tasks focus on solutions that include ocean observing assets for data collection\, reimagining the utility of telecommunications cables\, administering probiotics for diseased coral\, identifying healthy habitats for lake sturgeon\, and deploying GO-BGC floats to monitor ocean health. \nFor 2024\, the MATE ROV World Championship event (June 20-22\, 2024)\, will be one of the largest and most internationally diverse yet! 82 teams from 17 different countries will be converging in Kingsport\, Tennessee to put their underwater robotics skills to the test. Teams will be traveling from near and far to compete\, including the United States\, Canada\, Scotland\, Mexico\, United Arab Emirates\, Italy\, Poland\, Germany\, Turkey\, Macau\, Hong Kong\, China\, Egypt\, Saudi Arabia\, and Singapore.

SUMMARY:2024 EARTH Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The 2024 EARTH workshop will be held June 24-28 in Seattle\, WA\, and is being co-hosted by the Global Ocean Biogeochemistry Array (GO-BGC)\, a project funded by the US National Science Foundation to build and deploy a global network of chemical and biological sensors that will monitor ocean health. This new network of floats will collect data on the chemistry and the biology of the ocean from the surface to a depth of 2\,000 meters\, and will allow scientists to pursue fundamental questions concerning ocean ecosystems\, observe ocean health and productivity\, and monitor the elemental cycles of carbon\, oxygen\, and nitrogen in the ocean through all seasons of the year. \nDuring this workshop\, educators work with active researchers to explore current science and/or engineering research\, data\, and conclusions. The educators are given time to develop their own curricula using the knowledge from these explorations and their own experiences to create classroom lessons tied to the abilities of their own students as well as current education standards and pedagogy. The teachers also develop connections with each other and with the researchers that assist them in expanding their classroom reach across the country. \nTeachers involved in this EARTH workshop will: \n\n\nCultivate relationships with local researchers and like-minded educators that can lead to future collaborations \n\n\nExplore available resources from supporting organizations and programs\, such as GO-BGC and MBARI\, and develop institutional connections that can aid in future lessons \n\n\nReceive a Certificate of Participation that provides evidence of 40 hours of professional development that can be used toward continuing education or certificate renewal \n\n\nDevelop new curriculum resources that use real science and authentic data to teach science content and process and address their needs and the needs of their students

DESCRIPTION:This is the first Stakeholder Meeting of the CIPM Sectorial Task Group on Climate Change and Environment (CIPM-STG-CENV). The Task Group has been established to provide a global focal point for metrology activities related to climate change and environment. \nExpected outcomes of the meeting are: \n\n\nAn overview of activities that are being undertaken to address recommendations from the BIPM-WMO 2022 workshop; \n\n\nIdentification of the organizations\, committees and groups that are coordinating activities to address recommendations from the BIPM-WMO 2022 workshop; \n\n\nIdentification of the recommendations from the BIPM-WMO 2022 workshop where no activity has been initiated and reasons why it has not been done; \n\n\nAn overview of the collaborative activities initiated between the Observation and Metrology communities; \n\n\nIdentification of new initiatives that could be progressed through collaborative actions between the Observation and Metrology communities\, and the groups that could coordinate this work; \n\n\nIdentification of new actions for CIPM-STG-CENV\, particularly those not covered by existing structures\, to facilitate progress in addressing the recommendations from the BIPM-WMO 2022 workshop as well as new initiatives. \n\n\nThis hybrid meeting will be held at BIPM Headquarters on 16-18 September 2024. This webinar will be focused on comparisons between BGC-Argo observations and ocean model simulations focusing on bbp and particulate forms of carbon. The webinar will begin with an update on the status of the GO-BGC float array\, followed by two short presentations. We’ll then close with a community discussion and Q&A session. Recordings will be available on the OCB and GO-BGC websites. \n1) Yui Takeshita (Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute\, USA\, yui@mbari.org): An update on the GO-BGC program \n2) Camila Serra-Pompei (Technical University of Denmark): Assessing the potential of backscattering as a proxy for phytoplankton carbon biomass \nThe particulate backscattering coefficient (bbp) has often been used as an optical proxy to estimate phytoplankton carbon biomass (Cphy). However\, total observed bbp is impacted by phytoplankton size\, cell composition\, and non-algal particles. The scarcity of phytoplankton carbon field data has prevented the quantification of uncertainties driven by these factors. Here\, we first review and discuss existing bbp algorithms by applying them to bbp data from the BGC-Argo array in surface waters (<10m) and show that errors can be large when the bbp signal is low. Next\, we use a global ocean circulation model (the MITgcm Biogeochemical and Optical model) that simulates plankton dynamics and associated inherent optical properties to quantify and understand uncertainties from bbp-based algorithms in surface waters. In an ideal world where field data has no methodological uncertainties\, the model shows that bbp algorithms could estimate phytoplankton carbon biomass with an absolute error close to 20% in most regions. \n3) Martí Galí Tàpias (Institute of Marine Sciences [ICM-CSIC]\, Spain): Constraining stocks and fluxes of Particulate Organic Carbon (POC) through the comparison between particulate backscattering measurements and the PISCESv2 model \nBGC-Argo data offers a great opportunity for model evaluation\, optimization\, and the development of improved parameterizations\, ultimately furthering our mechanistic understanding. However\, comparison between BGC-Argo observations and models requires careful consideration of the spatiotemporal scales that each of them can resolve. When using particulate backscattering (bbp) as a proxy for particulate organic carbon (POC)\, additional attention must be paid to the variability in the POC/bbp ratio\, its uncertainty\, and its underpinning biogeochemical drivers. In this talk I will present comparisons between bbp from BGC-Argo and simulated POC based on both 3D (Eulerian) and 1D (pseudo-Lagrangian) frameworks. I will discuss the potential and limitations of model parameter optimization using BGC-Argo bbp as the observational reference. SUMMARY:GO-BGC Float Data and Science Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Registration is now open for a BGC Float Data and Science workshop\, hosted by the Global Ocean Biogeochemistry Array (GO-BGC) program!! The workshop will take place on August 17-21\, 2026 at the University of Washington\, Seattle\, USA.  \nThe workshop will be a Hack-a-thon type workshop\, where small groups will pursue a scientific question/objective using BGC-Argo data. This workshop will include a combination of an overview of BGC-Argo and the GO-BGC program\, lectures\, working (coding) with float data with your group\, and  a tour of the float lab at UW. Participants are expected to have programming experience\, but familiarity with BGC-Argo data is not required. We encourage applications from a variety of disciplines. \nIf you are interested in participating\, please fill out this form. Registration will be open until the end of April. Acceptance letters to the workshop will be sent out in early June.
