2024 R/V Atlantis Transit

Float deployments on the R/V Atlantis transit from San Diego, California to Kodiak, Alaska.

A true cruise of opportunity, GO-BGC will deploy two of its new SOLO floats from the R/V Atlantis as the ship transits from California to Alaska. The ship will slow down for each deployment, but otherwise is steaming with no other science parties onboard. The GO-BGC technician will ride the ship and oversee each deployment, as well as collect certain water samples from the ship’s underway system. Nutrient and pH samples will be analyzed by Scripps Institution of Oceanography, POC samples by the University of California, Santa Barbara, and HPLC samples by NASA. The technician is also deploying two biogeochemical floats for NOAA and 10 surface drifters for Scripps.
Three more SOLO floats will be deployed on the subsequent cruise along the Aleutian Islands. Some of the floats have been adopted by schools around the world, who will track their assigned float for years to come.

Atlantis Artwork

Art abounds on board the R/V Atlantis.Something I really like about R/V Atlantis is the artwork on the walls. Most ships I’ve been on have a few pictures and certificates hanging in the library, but out here there’s much more than that. All over the ship there are...
