Art and Science

Art abounds on board the R/V Atlantis.

Something I really like about R/V Atlantis is the artwork on the walls. Most ships I’ve been on have a few pictures and certificates hanging in the library, but out here there’s much more than that. All over the ship there are large, beautiful canvas prints of pictures that crew members and techs have taken in ports all over the world. It’s a nice way to break up the long white hallway on the main deck that connects the various labs. When out at sea for a stretch, I start to miss seeing land, mountains, and the color green. Even though this is only a short trip, it’s nice to have these pops of color and reminders that there’s more to see than just ocean. It cheers me up every time I pass one!

There is also some unique wall art in Atlantis’s library, including a couple of really cool pictures and patches from the teams of astronauts that flew on NASA’s Space Shuttle Atlantis.
